Director of Online Strategy
Position Description
Families USA is a national nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable health care for all Americans. Families USA is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Director of Online Strategy to lead the organization as we develop an integrated web, email, blog, and social media strategic plan that effectively engages our key audiences and enhances the organization’s overall branding and messaging objectives. The Director of Online Strategy will play a critical role in creating a new online department for the organization that has the staff capacity, working in partnership with other departments, to carry out the online strategic plan. The Director of Online Strategy will report to the Executive Director and serve as an integral member of the senior management team. This position requires expertise in online marketing, social media, and communications. We are looking for a mature leader who has staff management experience and, ideally, experience in a nonprofit advocacy organization.
Responsibilities:
- Advise the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director, and the senior management team on online communications strategy for the organization, including evaluating and recommending new technology and digital assets such as mobile, video, and online training tools.
- Develop and implement an integrated strategic online communications plan to advance Families USA’s strategic objectives and increase the visibility of its programs.
- Manage the tools, platforms, and processes for implementing the strategy and vision.
- Lead and oversee the day-to-day activities of the online communications department, including budgeting, planning, and staff development.
- Oversee the redesign and reorganization of Families USA’s web properties, with a focus on familiesusa.org.
- Manage Families USA’s online communications channels, including familiesusa.org, the blog, all social media platforms, and the email marketing program.
- Regularly analyze the data generated by online activities and use that knowledge to guide both strategy and implementation of tactics.
- Coordinate closely with the Publications, Government Affairs, Health Policy, and Communications Departments to ensure consistent branding and messaging across all of Families USA’s communications channels.
An ideal applicant would possess these qualifications:
- A minimum of 5 years managing online campaigns and communications;
- Experience supervising staff;
- Experience working in an issue advocacy organization, preferably a nonprofit;
- A track record of successfully developing and executing integrated online strategies;
- Strong management, budgeting, analytical, and organizational skills, including relevant project management experience;
- Exceptional communication skills—both written and verbal;
- Experience with content management software, preferably with Convio and/or Blackbaud products;
- Extensive experience in data analysis and testing of digital strategies;
- Ability to work with diverse people and organizations;
- Excellent relationship building skills with ability to influence others to move toward a common vision or goal;
- Commitment to social justice;
- Knowledge of health policy a plus; and
- Knowledge of online fundraising a plus.
