Director of Publications

Families USA, a national nonprofit organization, has worked for 30 years to promote high-quality, affordable health care for everyone.

We are seeking a Director of Publications to ensure that all written materials produced by Families USA contribute to the achievement of the organization’s goals. Successful applicants will have strong communications skills, familiarity with health policy, a passion for social justice, and the ability to think strategically.

The Director will work closely with other departments—Health Policy, Health Equity, Government Affairs, Communications, Field, and Online Services—to develop and refine the organization’s work plan, particularly the identification of publications and other written materials that will be needed to carry out that plan.

Families USA publications, emails, and other written matter should be clear and straightforward, minimizing jargon; should employ correct spelling and grammar; should be appropriate in tone and level of detail for the intended audience; should be attractive and inviting in presentation; and, above all, should be factually accurate. The Director of Publications will develop policies and procedures to help the organization meet these standards and will work to ensure that they are followed.

Specifically, the Director will be responsible for the following:

  • Understanding the issues we work on, and the political context that shapes our work, in order to help us plan and develop effective publications.
  • Supervising the Deputy Director of Publications, the Editor, the Editorial Assistant, and the Senior Graphic Designer in the production of specific publications or other written materials.
  • Developing, updating, and administering Families USA Style Guides for written publications and for electronic communications/publications.
  • Clarifying the audience, purpose, tone, and content of each forthcoming publication.
  • Ensuring the accuracy of the information conveyed in our written materials (working closely with appropriate Health Policy staff).
  • Developing a schedule for production and a plan for dissemination of all written products.
  • Tracking all Families USA publications and making sure that they are posted on our website.
  • Ensuring that written content for our website, blogs, and emails is clear and correct.
  • Overseeing the layout and design of publications.
  • Some editing of written materials.

Qualified applicants will have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience working in the field of health policy; knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act desirable.
  • Strong command of the English language and significant editing experience.
  • Deep interest in effective communications, including familiarity with plain English.
  • Knowledge of online world and writing for online outlets, including websites, blogs, and emails.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and at least five years experience managing staff.
  • A strong commitment to distributive justice.

To apply, send a cover letter and resume by email to pubsdirectorsearch@familiesusa.org and label the email as “Publications Director.” The salary will be commensurate with experience. Families USA offers a generous benefits package, including excellent health insurance, life and long-term disability insurance benefits, and generous vacation, sick leave, and holiday schedules. Families USA is an equal opportunity employer.
