Senior Health Policy Analyst, Health System Reform
Families USA is a national nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated to the achievement of quality, affordable health care and coverage for all Americans. We bring the voice of consumers in federal and state health policy debates, with a strong focus on the needs of low-income and vulnerable populations.
Families USA is looking for a new senior member of our Health Policy Department who will work closely with the Director of Health System Reform Advocacy to develop substantive policy expertise on a portfolio of health system reform issues.
Encouraging consumer-friendly health system change that increases the quality of care and can reduce long-term health care costs is a top organizational priority for Families USA. This work includes national and state-level efforts to change the way that care is delivered and paid for, and entails both substantive analyses and collaborative efforts with a diverse and broad range of partners. The Senior Health Policy Analyst will play an active role in this work. In addition, it is essential that the Senior Health Policy Analyst have an interest in and capacity for analyzing qualitative and quantitative research. Key tasks on the Senior Health Policy Analyst’s work plate will include:
- Following emerging issues in health system reform at both the state and federal levels;
- Contributing to the development of organizational positions on health system reform issues;
- Preparing written materials and providing substantive technical assistance and strategic guidance to state and national health care advocates in conjunction with other Families USA staff;
- Working with the Director of Health System Reform to develop and execute the System Reform track of Families USA’s annual Health Action Conference;
- Analyzing qualitative and quantitative research, including various research methodologies;
- Representing Families USA at relevant conferences, meetings, advisory boards, and coalitions; and
- Supervising and mentoring junior staff.
Qualifications: Candidates for the position should have at least three to five years of health policy and research experience. The ideal applicant should have the following qualities:
- A deep commitment to principles of social justice and health equity;
- An understanding of federal and state-level legislative and administrative advocacy on behalf of consumers;
- A foundation of knowledge on issues related to health system reform;
- An ability to advance original analyses of the impact of health system reform initiatives on consumers;
- Strong research, writing, messaging, and communication skills;
- A strong working knowledge of research methodologies and basic statistics, and an interest in qualitative and quantitative research;
- An ability to think big picture and also have an eye for detail and accuracy;
- Ability to work independently as well as part of an effective team;
- Ability to manage multiple projects with flexibility, humor, and grace; and
- The capacity and desire to mentor junior staff.
