Supreme Court Upholds Affordable Care Act
On June 28, the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in a 5-4 decision. It ruled that the individual responsibility provision was constitutional under Congress’s power to collect taxes. While the court decided that funding for the Medicaid program could not be withheld if states refused to expand the program, it upheld the mandatory expansion of Medicaid and the generous package of federal spending that accompanies it. The decision is a major victory for all Americans, as the country can move forward with implementing health reform and ensuring that every citizen has the right to affordable, quality health care.
