Optional Long-Term Services
All states offer some optional services.
Institutional Care
States have the option of covering the following services:
- Inpatient hospital and nursing facility services for individuals who are 65 or older and live in an institution for mental diseases (IMD).
- Services in an intermediate care facility (ICF) for individuals with mental retardation (ICF/MR).
- Inpatient psychiatric hospital services for individuals under age 21.
Non-Institutional Care (Home- and Community-Based Services)
States can offer the following home- and community-based services:
- Home health services to individuals who are in optional eligibility categories. (The same services must be offered as are available to those who are in the mandatory eligibility categories.)
- Respiratory care services for ventilator-dependent individuals
- Case management services
- Personal care services
- Private duty nursing
- Hospice care
- Adult day care services
- PACE (Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) program services
States have wide latitude through waiver programs to cover other home- and community- based services that will help people avoid institutionalization.
