Disease-Specific Research

 

1.  National Cancer Institute (NCI)

NCI is one of the nation's leading authorities on cancer.  As one of the National Institutes of Health, NCI conducts innovative cancer research, educates the public, and coordinates cancer initiatives nationally and abroad, and facilitates grants for future cancer research. NCI partners with the National Cancer Program, universities, and foundations to implement its programs.  The cancer information page includes links to the following resources:

  • Types of Cancer - Common cancers are listed by body location and system. This section includes an alphabetical listing of cancer types.
  • Treatment - This section provides information on newly approved or less known treatments as well as explanations of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Drug information is provided, and complementary and alternative therapies are explained.  A section on treatment facilities gives information about how to find doctors and facilities.
  • Specific Screening and Testing for Cancer - Screening and testing information is given in general and for specific cancers. This section provides information about imaging, laboratory tests, and other testing.
  • Support and Resources - "How To Evaluate Health Information on the Internet: Questions and Answers" is a guide for individuals seeking health information on the Web. This section covers general support information, support organizations, finances, insurance, hospice, home care, health care, and support for children with cancer, among other topics.
  • Cancer Literature - CANCERLIT® is NCI's comprehensive database for cancer information. The public can search this Web library for biomedical journals, proceedings, books, reports, and doctoral theses. The database has information dating from 1960 and is updated frequently. NCI Publications allows individuals to locate publications, and NCI's Physician Data Query (PDQ) contains an up-to-date listing of cancer information.

 

2.  American Diabetes Association

The For Health Professionals section of the American Diabetes Association Web site includes information about clinical practice recommendations, access to search diabetes journals, and clinical trials.

 

3.  American Heart Association (AHA)

The Scientific Publications section includes statistics, links to searchable journal articles, clinical updates, and references.  The Scientific Statement and Practice Guidelines page allows you to view a topic listing of active Medical and Scientific Statements from the American Heart Association.  Most AHA Scientific Statements and Advisories are published in the journal Circulation.  Joint AHA and American College of Cardiology (ACC) statements also appear in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).

 

4.  Alzheimer's Association

The Alzheimer's Association Resources by Topic section includes a diagnosis and treatment section with helpful treatment and practice guidelines information.

 

5.  American Academy of Neurology (AAN)

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is a professional organization representing neurologists worldwide.  The site includes practice guidelines for neurological conditions such as dementia, epilepsy, head aches, MS, movement disorders and more.

 

6.  National MS Society 

The National MS Society Research section provides information about clinical trials, a professional resource center, an annotated bibliography, and other helpful research.

 

7.  National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD)

National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) is a not-for-profit federation of voluntary health organizations dedicated to helping people with rare orphan diseases and assisting the organizations that service them.  Through its Rare Disease Database (RDB), NORD provides reports in understandable, layperson's terminology on more than 1,000 rare disorders.

 

8.  National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) browse all disorders page allows you to search by disorder and receive general information about the disorder, research literature, related organizations, and clinical trial information.

 

9.  Rehabilitation Research and Training Center in Neuromuscular Diseases (RRTC/NMD)

Rehabilitation Research and Training Center in Neuromuscular Diseases (RRTC/NMD) seeks to improve the lives of individuals with neuromuscular diseases by developing and evaluating new strategies that address lifelong needs for research-based medical care and counseling, psychosocial well-being, education, and independent living.  The website provides a neuromuscular disease information center, that includes medical and rehabilitation services, gene testing, and clinical studies information.
