Medicare Road Show Makes Its First Stop in the Southwest April 12, 2004 Albuquerque, New Mexico Over 165 seniors, advocates, and political leaders filled the First Unitarian Church in downtown Albuquerque when the Medicare Road Show swung into town on April 12. The event opened with a showing of the video explaining the new Medicare drug law and narrated by trusted newsman Walter Cronkite. Several prominent speakers then addressed the enthusiastic crowd, including Senator Jeff Bingaman, Lt. Governor Diane Denish, Secretary of Aging and Long Term Care Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Ron Pollack, Executive Director of Families USA. Senator Bingaman stressed his commitment to fixing the Medicare prescription drug law and to giving seniors a real drug benefit that provides significant help with sky-high prescription drug costs. After his presentation, one senior commented that "I always knew that doughnuts were not healthy for me, but this doughnut hole makes me sick!" The speakers received a standing ovation, and seniors ended the event feeling energized and ready to fight for changes to the new law. |
