The Windy City Welcomes the Medicare Road Show March 19, 2004 On a brisk Friday morning, the Medicare Road Show went to Chicago to visit our friends at North Park Village. One hundred senior citizens warmly greeted Families USA Government Affairs Director Bill Vaughan, Congressman Rahm Emanuel (D-5), and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-9).
Each attendee was armed with a tool kit with informational materials about the new Medicare law and a button with the Medicare Road Show campaign logo. While snacking on the appropriate food-doughnut holes-the crowd learned about the financial doughnut hole that the new law creates. Congressman Emanuel provided a comparison of the costs of drugs in the United States with other countries, pointing out that American seniors face much higher costs than do older people elsewhere. Congresswoman Schakowsky reiterated this message. She also gave Syd Bild, one of the stars of the Walter Cronkite Medicare video, an autographed copy of the 850-paged Medicare law and notes. Her inscription stated, "When the law is changed, we will celebrate. Thank you for all of your hard work." Syd ended the event with his personal tale of the cost of his prescriptions and a call for seniors to unite in order to change the Medicare law.
