Road Show Educates Seniors in the Northeast April 8, 2004 Portland, Maine A very excited crowd greeted the Medicare Road Show speakers in Portland, Maine. Nearly 100 seniors paid close attention as Congressman Tom Allen described the pitfalls of the new Medicare prescription drug law. It was clear that the Congressman is an expert authority on the issue and seniors take him very seriously. "When you talk to legislators, you're preaching to the choir. When you talk to Congressman Allen, you're preaching to the Pope," said Families USA's executive director, Ron Pollack, acknowledging Allen's expertise. This was the Congressman's second visit to the senior center to discuss the new law.
The morning of the event, Pollack and Allen met with editorial page writers of the Portland Press Herald. The following Sunday, April 11, a long editorial recognized the shortcomings of the Medicare prescription drug legislation and called for revisions: "However, while there's much to be confused about with respect to this plan, one thing should be clear: It stinks," concluded the editorial.
