The Medicare Road Show Makes Its Second Stop in the Pacific Northwest! April 2, 2004
A group of 100 seniors listened attentively as legendary journalist Walter Cronkite explained the new changes to Medicare. "I am just too upset to hear more, I don't know what my wife and I are going to do," said a senior, who was disturbed to learn about the many shortcomings of the new legislation, including the significant gap in coverage referred to as the "doughnut hole."
The educational video hosted by Cronkite was one of the many informational tools used at the Medicare Road Show in Portland, Oregon. The event was held at the First Unitarian Church. Dan Gardner, Commissioner of Labor and Industries, and Dr. Kathleen Weaver, Director of the Oregon Health Resources Commission, joined Bill Vaughan, Director of Government Affairs for Families USA, in addressing the audience. After the video was shown, Commissioner Gardner spoke about the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs, the inadequate protections provided by the new law, and the huge profits to be reaped by pharmaceutical companies.
