Anton Gunn of South Carolina Is Recognized for His Work in Social Justice and Community Issues
Gunn Receives the Families USA Consumer Health Advocate of the Year Award
Washington, D.C. - Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers, presented Anton Gunn with the Consumer Health Advocate of the Year Award at the annual Families USA Health Action conference.
The award, presented every year since 1998, recognizes outstanding contributions on behalf of our nation's health care consumers. The award was presented to Mr. Gunn for his commitment to social and political issues that affect the people of South Carolina and the country at large.
“Anton Gunn is a passionate advocate devoted to social justice for low-income individuals,” said Ron Pollack, Executive Director of Families USA.
Gunn’s commitment to social justice began when he graduated from college and started a career as a motivational speaker and social commentator. In addition to his interest in education and social issues that affect young people, Gunn is a community activist for education and health care reform. Gunn hopes that universal health care will become a reality in South Carolina, and he speaks to groups around the state to build community support for this goal. He is also the host of "Front and Center," a radio show where he speaks about social and political issues. In addition, he owns his own motivational speaking company.
Gunn’s work carries over into his personal life. He is involved in the faith community. He also serves as a board member of Grassroots Leadership, and he was appointed by the Columbia South Carolina City Council to the Citizen Advisory Committee for Community Development.
Gunn received his bachelor’s degree in 1994 from the University of South Carolina and later received his master’s degree from the same university. At the University of South Carolina, Gunn founded the University of South Carolina Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, trading in his career as a football player to devote his life to social justice.
