Anton Gunn of South Carolina Is Recognized for His Work in Social Justice and Community Issues

Gunn Receives the Families USA Consumer Health Advocate of the Year Award

Washington, D.C. - Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers, presented Anton Gunn with the Consumer Health Advocate of the Year Award at the annual Families USA Health Action conference. The award, presented every year since 1998, recognizes outstanding contributions on behalf of our nation's health care consumers.

The Consumer Health Advocate of the Year Award recognizes outstanding contributions on behalf of our nation's health care consumers. The award was presented to Mr. Gunn for his commitment to social and political issues that affect the people of South Carolina and the country at large.

“Anton Gunn is a passionate advocate devoted to social justice for low-income individuals,” said Ron Pollack, Executive Director of Families USA.

Gunn’s commitment to social justice started when he graduated from college and began a career as a motivational speaker and social commentator. In addition to his interest in education and social issues in the youth community, Gunn is a community activist for education and health care reform. Gunn hopes that universal health care will become a reality in South Carolina, and he speaks to various groups to build community support for this goal. Gunn is the host of Front and Center, a radio show where he speaks about social and political issues.

Gunn’s work carries over into his personal life.  He is involved in the faith community and owns his own motivational speaking company. Gunn’s favorite topics to address in his work are politics, the need for strong leadership in the United States, and public policy. He serves as a board member of Grassroots Leadership and was an appointee by the Columbia South Carolina City Council to the Citizen Advisory Committee for Community Development.

Gunn received his bachelor’s degree in 1994 from the University of South Carolina and later received his master’s degree from the same university. At the University of South Carolina, Gunn founded the University of South Carolina Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and traded his career as a football player to devote his life social justice.
