Camille Watson Is Recognized for Her Efforts to Build a Health Equity Movement in Massachusetts

Watson Receives the Families USA Consumer Health Advocate of the Year Award

Washington, D.C. - Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers, presented Camille Watson with the Consumer Health Advocate of the Year Award at the annual Families USA Health Action conference.

The award, presented every year since 1998, recognizes outstanding contributions on behalf of our nation's health care consumers. The award was presented to Ms. Watson for her work leading a coalition that drafted an omnibus bill to address health disparities and for her continued commitment to health equity in Massachusetts.

“Camille Watson is a passionate advocate who has devoted herself to underserved populations in Massachusetts. As the first state to pass comprehensive disparities reduction legislation, Massachusetts has the potential to serve as a role mode for other states looking to advance health equity and reduce disparities,” said Ron Pollack, Executive Director of Families USA.

Camille Watson currently serves as the Health Disparities Policy Coordinator for Health Care for All (MA). In this role, she oversees the organization’s health disparities policy initiatives and manages the Disparities Action Network (DAN), a statewide advocacy coalition. Ms. Watson began the development of the DAN in 2005, coordinating a diverse group of stakeholders to draft, file, and advocate for comprehensive disparities reduction legislation. She has led all of the coalition’s activities, working in collaboration with DAN partners, community members, and legislative leaders to build a health equity movement in Massachusetts.

Ms. Watson has maintained a commitment to the health of underserved populations, conducting research and evaluation related to inequality on a variety of issues, including access to genetic technology, disease prevention models, and health services delivery. She has served on a number of research committees and has provided technical assistance and evaluation services for community health programs.

In addition to her health policy work, Ms. Watson is committed to the learning opportunities of children. As a literacy volunteer and mentor in urban schools, she has instructed elementary students and coordinated after school literacy programs for more than a decade.
