Families USA Receives Telly Award for Video Portraying Improvements to Health Care Brought by the Affordable Care Act

Washington, D.C.—“The Real Cost of Repeal” is a short but powerful video, an intimate look at three families who have seen first-hand the benefits of the health reform overhaul that was signed into law 2010.

Now this six-minute YouTube video from Families USA has been named as one of the winners of the 32nd Annual Telly Awards. These awards seek to honor the finest video and film productions and web commercials, as well as outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs.

“The Real Cost of Repeal” tells three stories of people who experienced hardships in America’s health care system that would have been fixed had the health reform law been in effect. The first is that of a young father, dead from kidney cancer that spread undiagnosed when he had no health coverage. The second story is that of a woman with a pre-existing condition who has found a job with health coverage that requires a 400-mile weekly commute. The final story is that of a young boy with hemophilia whose parents faced a lifetime cap that would cut off coverage for his life-sustaining treatments.

As the video makes clear, the lives of families like these would be dramatically changed and improved by provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

“We are honored to be given this award, but the real strength of this video is the strength and resolve of the families who shared their stories with us,” Ron Pollack, Executive Director of Families USA, said today. “As they tell their stories, we can see how the Affordable Care Act will improve the lives of so many people by giving them access to quality, affordable health care.”

Families USA received notice of its Telly Award this week from Glen Pearcy of Glen Pearcy Productions, Barnesville, Maryland, who produced the video for the organization.

The Telly Awards group says it receives more than 11,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries. These entries do not compete against each other but are instead judged against a high standard of merit, allowing for multiple award winners in both the Silver Telly Award and Bronze Telly Award categories.

“The Real Cost of Repeal” is one of the Bronze Telly Award winners. It premiered as a welcoming video for President Obama, who addressed Families USA’s 2011 conference of national health care advocates in January.
