Vermont Governor Signs Landmark Health Reform Law

New Vermont Law Demonstrates the State-by-State Flexibility of the Affordable Care Act

Today, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin signed H.R. 202, which establishes Green Mountain Care – the state’s approach to implementing the federal Affordable Care Act. The following is the statement of Ron Pollack, Executive Director of the consumer health organization Families USA, about this development:

“Today Vermont takes a giant step towards the achievement of high-quality, affordable health coverage and care for every state resident. It is landmark legislation, and it demonstrates that the Affordable Care Act allows states to establish their own unique approaches towards improving health coverage, costs, and quality of care.

“Vermont’s new law and the Green Mountain Care roadmap for implementing the Affordable Care Act is a significant success story. We hope that other states across the country take inspiration from Vermont to implement their own unique pathways to improving health coverage, costs, and quality of care.

“Vermont’s achievement builds on the state’s history and leadership in expanding health coverage and the commitment of Governor Shumlin and key leaders in the state legislature. It is also a testament to the dedicated work of state consumer advocates who saw that their vision for Vermont could become a reality by maximizing the federal resources available to the states since the passage of the Affordable Care Act.”
