As Sky-High Health Care Costs Top Voter Concerns, Families USA’s Stop the Bleed: Cut Costs, Not Care Campaign Gains Nationwide Momentum
SEIU, MomsRising, Community Change, Popular Democracy, Main Street Alliance, Small Business Majority, and Others Join Effort to Rein in High Health Care Costs
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Families USA announced today that its Stop the Bleed: Cut Costs, Not Care campaign is now officially active in all 50 states. Launched in January, Stop the Bleed is getting candidates across the country on the record about what they plan to do to address the high prices and abusive practices of health care corporations.
Families USA has partnered with leading national grassroots groups, including MomsRising, SEIU, Community Change, Popular Democracy, Main Street Alliance, Small Business Majority, and the list is growing at the national and state level. The organizations are employing a massive network of volunteers all asking candidates running for federal office the same question: What will you do to hold healthcare corporations accountable for high costs?
“Anyone running for office of any party this year must be willing to take on the health care corporations that charge prices that are not just high, but are inflated and irrational. Voters are mad at health care corporations that charge more because they can, but they are furious at Congress for not taking action. The Stop the Bleed campaign is forcing candidates to commit to taking real action to lower health care costs.”
— Anthony Wright, Executive Director, Families USA
With over 50 committed partner organizations activating grassroots advocates across the country, Stop the Bleed has asked candidates in nearly all 50 states how they plan to address the high cost of health care. Candidates and policymakers have responded.
“Billionaire health care corporations are putting profits over patients, even buying up independently owned clinics across the nation to pad their own pockets and leave patients out in the cold. Big Pharma continues to jack up drug prices to pad its bottom line while taxpayers fund its research and development. In the richest country in the world, no person should have to worry about whether they’ll be able to afford to see a doctor or get prescription drugs if they become sick or get into an accident.
“That’s why I’m fighting to crack down on corporate greed in health care, lower prescription drug prices, and put patients and providers back in the driver’s seat. When we take on these corporate abuses and invest in the foundations families need, we can build healthier, stronger communities.”
— Senator Jeff Merkley, Oregon
Washington is feeling pressure to address health care in the midterms, as poll after poll continues to show it as a top concern for voters, and a top affordability issue as well. Organizations representing patients, consumers, workers, employers, providers and more are all involved and urging greater accountability from Washington when it comes to health care costs.
“No matter if you’re a homecare worker in Anchorage, a janitor in Boston, or a retiree in Miami, we’re all paying the cost of corporate healthcare profiteering at the same time we are dealing with the largest cut in healthcare funding our nation has ever seen under the GOP’s Big Ugly Bill. Millions of American families are struggling, while healthcare workers are underpaid and overworked. SEIU members are joining working people across the country to hold our elected officials accountable for stopping corporate greed in healthcare, lowering our costs and delivering high quality healthcare for us all.”
— Leslie Frane, Executive Vice President, SEIU
“Our health system is broken by design to help big business make money, not deliver care. Communities are filling in the gaps where our policymakers have failed – with emergency response to clinic closures to mutual aid networks. But it’s impossible to keep up with the needs of millions who’ve had their healthcare cut or their monthly bills explode. Policymakers must do their job and put wellness of our communities over more wealth for corporations.”
— Dorian Warren, Co-President, Community Change Action
“If you ask any of the tens of thousands of members across our 49 grassroots organizations what they want from anyone seeking office and the answer is clear: lower the cost of living. Families are skipping doctor visits and rationing prescriptions while Washington takes our healthcare dollars and hands them to ICE. Nobody asked for that. We need leaders who believe healthcare is a human right and who will use public office to take on corporate greed, not fund it.”
— DaMareo Cooper, Executive Director, Popular Democracy
“Our country’s health care system is badly broken, and moms and families are struggling as a result. Every day, we hear from moms who are forced to make impossible choices between putting food on the table or paying for prescription medications, or who are delaying the tests and care their families need because of the cost. Congress made things dramatically worse with its devastating cuts to Medicaid and by refusing to continue the Affordable Care Act premium tax credits. Moms want to know what candidates will do to stop the bleed, and if they will prioritize moms and families over greedy corporations.”
— Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and CEO, MomsRising
“As healthcare costs reach a breaking point for small businesses, we hope to see an increased commitment from policymakers to make healthcare more affordable for Main Street. This would include working to make permanent tax credits that lower monthly insurance premiums, increasing health billing transparency, and restricting healthcare provider consolidation that reduces options and leads to higher prices.”
— Alexis D’Amato Falvey, Senior Director of Federal Government Affairs, Small Business Majority
“Small business owners are getting squeezed from every direction on health care costs, and they’re done waiting for Washington to act. Our members are small employers trying to do right by their workers, but consolidated hospital systems and pharmacy benefit managers keep driving up prices they have no power to negotiate down. Candidates who want Main Street’s support need a real plan to rein in that consolidation and bring costs back down to earth.”
— Shawn Phetteplace, National Campaigns Director, Main Street Alliance
