Trump Administration’s “Anti-Fraud” Task Force Is Just Doubling Down on Policies to Push and Price People Out of Health Coverage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, issued the following statement in response to Vice President JD Vance’s announcement today that the administration is removing more than 750,000 people from Affordable Care Act marketplace coverage, with another 440,000 under review:

“Once again, the Trump administration is using alleged fraud accusations as a political smokescreen to double down on what they are actually doing: taking health coverage away from hundreds of thousands of people.

“Real fraud should be stopped, especially dishonest brokers who sign people up without their knowledge. Previously, anti-fraud policies and procedures banned those brokers, but this administration reinstated them. Now families, not bad actors, are paying the price.

“Rather than addressing rising health care costs, the administration is forcing more Americans to become uninsured, live sicker, die younger, and risk being one emergency away from financial ruin. People are uninsured because of this administration’s own aggressive policies to push and price people out of their health plans, making it harder to get on and stay on coverage.

Millions have already lost marketplace coverage this year after Congress made the deliberate decision to double premiums by letting the enhanced premium tax credits expire. Voters see this for what it is: a majority say that four million people losing their ACA enrollment coverage is bad news, and not a positive result of the government removing fraudulent ACA enrollees.

“Fighting fraud should not result in eligible Americans losing coverage. Families want health care that is affordable, comprehensive, and accessible, not political stunts as a weak reframe of massive cuts to Medicaid and marketplaces.”
